CER 8620 Matched Oil-Soaked Wedge Trio
Some history: Over the past twenty-five years, golf club companies have been quietly reducing the lofts on all of their club lines, in order to claim "greater distance" for their clubs. (Remember when new sets included a 2-iron--and remember that you could HIT it? Today's 3-irons are within a degree or two of the classic 2-irons of yesteryear).
As a result, the average Pitching Wedge has a loft similar to a 9-iron of twenty years ago, along with similar distance. That left a large gap between the lofts of the modern pitching wedge (about 47-48°) and the sand wedge (which has remained consistent for many years at around 56°). Enter, the "Gap" wedge, to fill the loft and distance gap between the pitching wedge and sand wedge. Later, the Lob wedge made its entrance on the golf scene. Today, many accomplished players carry more wedges in their bags than woods; they know more birdies are made--and matches won--with the "scoring" clubs, not the "power" clubs.
The custom club component companies have responded to this trend by creating matches sets of wedges, maintaining a consistent look, feel, weight and loft progression through the set.

This Trio of matched wedges includes a 52° Gap (or Approach) wedge, a 56° Sand wedge, and a 60° Lob wedge. Built to Old School Putters' custom progressive lengths, with stepless steel shafts and tour wrap grips, they look as good as they play.
These classically styled wedges are investment cast from 8620 carbon steel for excellent feel. Offered in a 52° loft with 4 degrees of bounce, a 56° with 12 degrees of bounce and 60° with 6 degrees of bounce. The sole is a consistent width grind, which provides more playability and utilizes the bounce angle when the face is rolled open. The 8620 carbon steel is used because it has similar hardness properties to the carbon steels used in the billet forging process. The CER Oil Soaked wedges are a raw carbon steel with the dark, natural finish of the raw material. The “Oil Soaked” refers to the protective oil that is put on the finish to prevent premature rusting. Once these wedges are ready to go in the bag, the oil should be wiped off. The natural rusting that will occur over time provide the unique look preferred by many better players.
